A Performative Ballet of Feelings

In keeping with our mission to support and inspire creativity, we ask the artists we collaborate with to offer insight into their work, a look behind the scenes, and the opportunity for our readers to learn more about the process. For our latest fashion feature, photographer Hector Tre answers our questions.
---
What was the inspiration behind this shoot?

The starting point was to reflect emotions into physical reality, using the body to express feelings that are difficult to put into words. One of the key components was using the body to challenge societal norms and explore the relationship between the self and the public (viewer). It is more about seeking out deep emotions and human relationships and placing them at the center of the frame/image, using movement as a pure and human form of communication.
-
Who or what are some of the biggest inspirations for your work?

Theater, ballet, and cinema. I’m very interested in how we can communicate through non-verbal language and how this can serve as a vehicle for exploring our inner selves and our deepest emotions, vulnerabilities, or experiences. “I am not interested in how people move, but what moves them,” Pina Bausch once said.
-
Do you have any surprising essentials on set?
Probably a good music playlist and a good speaker! I don’t think that’s anything out of the ordinary, but it is essential. Through music, we can tap into different emotions and memories, and this can have a huge impact on our bodies and the way we respond to situations. It’s very important to me to know how to create an atmosphere so that both the model and the rest of the team are on the same frequency.
-
Are there any trends that have caught your attention recently?
I’m really interested in the different æsthetic and fashion trends related to survival. I think we live in a world that’s preparing to survive and anticipating a somewhat ‘catastrophic’ future. We’re seeing clothes that often feature detachable parts, hidden pockets, or built-in elements designed for carrying gear, bridging the gap between streetwear and survival gear. This ‘Armor’ Mentality, coined by Bill Cunningham, where clothing is worn as a protective layer, both physically and psychologically, to navigate a chaotic world.
-
What is something you wish you had known when you were starting your career?
That you shouldn’t follow trends, but rather trust your inner instinct; whatever catches your eye, follow it and make it your own.
